DNS
DNS stands for Domain Name System and acts as the internet's phonebook, translating human-friendly website names (like www.example.com) into the machine-readable IP addresses like 172.217.160.142. It is a foundational service of the internet and for customers using CoreSite’s Blended IP service, DNS enables:
- Easy management of public IP space
- Reverse DNS setup
- DNS lookup finds the IP address for a given domain name, a PTR or pointer record does the reverse: it takes an IP address and finds the corresponding domain name
- Reverse DNS improves security by verifying that IPs map to legitimate hostnames, helping block spoofing and spam. It also supports compliance by providing accountability and auditability in logs, which many regulations and email standards may require
- Coresite will provide integration with customer's own nameservers if preferred
CoreSite uses AWS Route 53 to manage DNS for all public IP space provided under the Blended IP service using CoreSite-owned IP addresses
DNS requests are free of charge but must be requested by logging into the MyCoresite portal and creating a support ticket
- Customers may request DNS entries for usable IP addresses assigned under their Blended IP circuit
- Support requests can be submitted for specific PTR (reverse DNS) records
- Once updates are made, it can take up to 24-48 hours for the update to propagate throughout the internet
